The anticipation builds as the World Surf League (WSL) Europe announces an exhilarating return to Cornwall for the Boardmasters Festival, set to unfold from August 6-10, 2025. This event marks Stop No. 2 of the 2025/2026 European Qualifying Series (QS) season and introduces the Longboard Qualifying Series (LQS) opener, promising an unforgettable week for both competitors and spectators alike.
A Hub of Talent: Why Cornwall Draws the Best
Cornwall, particularly Fistral Beach, is not just a backdrop; it’s a vital component of the UK’s surf culture. At the Boardmasters Festival, the coastline transforms into a stage where local talent meets international surfers. This year, the event is expected to attract the region's top surfers striving to qualify for the Challenger Series or accumulate valuable points toward their regional rankings. The long summer days and pristine beach breaks create an ideal environment for both competition and celebration, making it a cherished occasion for surf lovers.
The Legacy Continues: Historic Wins and New Champions
Reflecting on the past, 2024 was a monumental year for the Boardmasters Festival, as it welcomed fresh talent to a legacy that champions excellence. With Lukas Skinner becoming the first British surfer to snag the Boardmasters title in over two decades, the event is a reminder of how opportunity nurtures talent. “Winning was unreal, especially against fellow Brit Patrick Langdon-Dark. It’s a moment I won’t forget,” Skinner shared. Additionally, Tya Zebrowski achieved her maiden victory in the QS realm, signaling a shift and resurgence in British surfing.
Meet the Ambassadors: Influential Figures Shaping Surf Culture
This year, Boardmasters is proud to align with some of the UK's most impactful surfers as official event ambassadors. Joining the fray are Ben and Lukas Skinner, renowned for their sporting acumen and contributions to surf culture. Ben, boasting a decorated competitive career with 12 European Longboard Championships, offers invaluable insights and guidance to younger surfers. Emily Currie, a powerhouse in her own right as a multiple champion, represents both victory and inspiration for aspiring female surfers.
Then there’s Alys Barton, a rising star who has gained recognition for her prowess in waves while deeply connecting with the ocean. “Surfing isn’t just a sport; it’s a feeling,” she says, each wave a personal testament to perseverance and spirit.
