Embrace Your Strength: The Role of Yoga in Surfing
As surfgirls, we know the unique strength challenges our bodies face both on and off the waves. Day 22 of "Life by SurfGirl" introduces an exciting combo of surfing and yoga designed to build strength while enhancing our connection to the ocean. But why exactly should we weave yoga into our surfing routines?
Understanding the Surfer's Anatomy
Your body is a finely tuned machine when you're out surfing, but without the right strength and flexibility, it can easily become overwhelmed. Many surfers experience fatigue and strain in areas like the shoulders, core, and lower back due to the demands of paddling and balancing on the board. Incorporating yoga specifically into your training regimen allows for targeted recovery and strength building.
Why Yoga? The Science Behind Strength and Flexibility
Yoga is not just about achieving the perfect downward dog; it is a holistic practice that has been shown to enhance core strength, improve flexibility, and minimize injuries among athletes. Research indicates that yoga can lead to increased muscle tone and strength, particularly when focusing on poses that engage multiple muscle groups, like warrior flows or balance postures.
Building Strength: Yoga Poses Every Surfer Should Know
- Warrior II (Virabhadrasana II): A key pose that enhances leg strength, stability, and mental focus.
- Plank Pose (Phalakasana): A foundational pose for core strength, crucial for paddling and balance.
- Bridge Pose (Setu Bandhasana): Great for strengthening the back, improving posture, and opening the hips after long surf sessions.
These poses, alongside others, can form a workout that provides both physical conditioning and mental clarity—two essential components for successful surfing.
The Emotional Benefits of Surf and Yoga

Studies show that by combining physical movement with mindfulness, we can boost our mood and overall satisfaction with life, which is essential for those of us who thrive on the thrill of the ocean.
Planning Your Surf Yoga Sessions
Making a commitment to integrate yoga into your surfing routine can significantly enhance your experience in the water. Here’s how you can start:
- Dedicate specific days in the week for yoga practice, especially before and after surf days.
- Create a balance—alternate between high-energy surf sessions and restorative yoga days.

As the waves call out to every surfer's soul, so too does the need to be strong, flexible, and mentally focused. By embracing yoga as a core part of your surf training strategy, you not only enhance your physical capacities but also connect deeply with your passion for the ocean. Gather your mat every time you step onto the sand, and let the practice of yoga guide you to newfound strength and inspiration.
