In a vibrant corner of Huntington Beach, a significant milestone was achieved on June 11 with the groundbreaking of the Marisol, a luxury senior housing community that promises to enrich the lives of its future residents. Positioned right across from City Hall, this development is not just a new building; it's a beacon of hope for the aging population of Orange County.
What Makes The Marisol Special?
The Marisol is designed to cater to a variety of needs, including assisted living and memory care services. Boasting 214 units, the facility is not only a place to live, but a lifestyle destination. According to Momentum Senior Living's CEO, Josh Johnson, many residents will likely choose to move into the community not just for care, but for its rich amenities. “We’re going to have a swimming pool, a full bar, activities... Interestingly enough, our most popular activity for seniors right now is boxing,” he highlighted during the ceremonial groundbreaking.

One of the standout features of The Marisol is its proximity to Huntington Beach High School. This closeness opens doors to numerous intergenerational activities, fostering relationships between young people and seniors. Johnson pointed out past successful collaborations, such as inviting high school bands to play at community events, and this kind of social interaction is expected to nurture a sense of community among residents.
The Journey to Today
The process of bringing The Marisol to life wasn't without its challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic notably slowed the project, complicating financing efforts due to rising interest rates. However, persistence paid off, as the project ultimately secured $252 million in construction financing, an effort facilitated by JLL Securities and HJ Sims, showcasing the enduring commitment to developing suitable housing for older adults.
Addressing a Growing Need
As we look ahead, the necessity for such senior housing initiatives becomes even clearer. The Orange County Office on Aging projects that adults aged 65 and older will comprise 36% of the county’s population by 2060, surpassing the statewide average of 33%. With the median age in Huntington Beach currently at around 44 years, there's an urgent need to address the requirements of an aging demographic. About 14% of Surf City’s population is already 70 or older, underscoring the importance of developments like The Marisol.

The Marisol is situated near a popular shopping center, enhancing convenience for its residents. “Great location, close to the beach, close to shopping and dining,” McKeon said, reflecting the community’s excitement about welcoming new amenities.
