Connecting with Nature Through Earth Skills
This Saturday, local residents of Sunset, Huntington, and Seal Beach have a chance to reconnect with nature's bounties at a unique event. The Environmental Nature Center (ENC) in Newport Beach has been fostering a deeper understanding of our natural surroundings through its Earth Skills series. From animal tracking to identifying native plants, these monthly classes offer hands-on experiences that bring participants closer to the land and its many offerings.
Discovering the Secrets of Native Plants
This weekend, the focus shifts to the verdant Modjeska Canyon, where herbalist William Broen will guide a 90-minute plant walk. Participants will step into the world of native plants, uncovering their medicinal properties and learning how they have sustained humans for centuries. Broen will share his passion for these plants, explaining how they adapt to their environments and the benefits they offer, from the antimicrobial properties of white sage to the respiratory benefits of yerba santa.
A Journey Back to Nature
For many, these lessons offer an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. "It gets you more connected to your surroundings," says ENC Vice President Lori Whalen. The series encourages participants to be present, to focus on the now, and to understand the natural world beyond the confines of their modern existence. Whether it’s using natural teas for healing or exploring animal habitats, these skills connect participants to an ancient way of living harmoniously with the earth.
Benefiting from Ancient Wisdom
Reflecting on the historical use of plants by the first peoples, William Broen emphasizes the importance of such knowledge today. “If we were living here 200 years ago, we’d all know about it,” he remarks. These earth skills not only inform but empower, providing participants with tools that could be invaluable in a self-reliant lifestyle. Through understanding, comes appreciation—a sentiment cultivated by Broen's insightful lessons.
A Part of Something Greater
Engaging with events like the plant walk offers a chance to be part of a larger community movement towards sustainable living. It’s an opportunity to participate in preserving local ecosystems and appreciating the outstanding beauty and utility of native plants. The Earth Skills series serves as a beacon, guiding locals in protecting and understanding the natural world.
