Griffin Cross Country Teams Shine at Central Park Invitational
In an impressive display of talent and determination, the Los Alamitos High cross country teams took second place in both the boys and girls varsity races at the Central Park Invitational held in Huntington Beach this past Saturday. With a younger team, comprised of fresh sophomores and determined freshmen, the Griffins have shown remarkable potential as they prepare for upcoming competitions.
Key Performers: Rising Stars and Veteran Leaders
The boys’ team was spearheaded by senior Matthew Mahue, whose strong performance saw him finishing fifth overall in a time of 15:41.5. This capped off a stellar showcase where he expressed his satisfaction, stating, "I think I ran one of my best races... I just felt good throughout." Following closely was sophomore Will Lieras, who finished sixth with a time of 15:47. Together, they led their team to a commendable second place with a score of 95 points, just shy of first-place Woodbridge at 84 points.
A Closer Look at the Girls’ Teams Triumph
Equally impressive was the performance of the girls’ team, which was led by junior Madeleine Heenan, who secured eighth place overall in a time of 18:58.1. The girls held off Taft High, finishing with a narrow score of 154 to 163. Heenan indicated that the team is evolving well, adjusting from the loss of key runners from previous years. "We’re coming together... starting to see the results that we wanted to see," she noted, emphasizing the team’s hard work during practice.
The Community’s Support and Team Spirit
The success of the Griffins is not just a testament to their athletic abilities but also highlights the supportive community surrounding them. Parents, coaches, and fans showed up to cheer, creating an electric atmosphere at the invitational. This collective support fosters a positive environment, encouraging athletes to push their limits and strive for personal bests.
Challenges Ahead and Goals for the Season
Despite a commendable performance, the Griffins are focused on improvement as they look ahead to the Orange County Championships on October 18 and the Sunset League Finals on November 1. Both teams know they’ll need to work hard to take their performances to the next level, especially considering the competitive nature of the upcoming events. Matthew Mahue expressed confidence, highlighting their familiarity with the course as a crucial advantage: "Training at Central Park has helped us a lot; we know where to push hard."
Building Future Success Through Hard Work
The mixture of seasoned seniors and eager newcomers creates a unique dynamic for the team. Coaches are optimistic about the development of their runners as they build the foundational skills needed for future success. With key events approaching, each athlete has the opportunity to implement what they’ve learned and contribute their best to the team’s overall performance.
In summary, the Griffin cross country teams’ recent achievements reflect their hard work and community spirit, setting a promising tone for the rest of the season.
