Join the Voices in Unity: America 250 Choir This Independence Day
As the Fourth of July approaches, a unique opportunity arises for local community members in Sunset Beach, Huntington Beach, and Seal Beach: the chance to join the Voices in Unity: America 250 Choir. This choir, founded by the passionate Costa Mesa Arts Commissioner Debora Wondercheck, aims to celebrate the diverse tapestry of American culture through song, harmonizing voices from various backgrounds into one unifying chorus.
The Heart of Community Through Music
Inviting individuals of all ages and musical abilities, the choir seeks to gather around 250 singers to perform during the annual Independence Day celebration at the OC Fair and Event Center. Wondercheck emphasizes that participation is open to all—no one needs to be a trained singer or a professional musician. The essence of this initiative lies in bringing people together to celebrate the values we hold dear as a nation.
Connecting Generations and Cultures
The choir’s rehearsals serve not only as a platform for music-making but as a valuable intergenerational connection. During recent practice sessions at the Costa Mesa Senior Center, singers of all ages gathered, with one heartwarming example being Alma Niles, a mother who reignited her passion for singing alongside her daughter Alyssa. Their shared experience dances through generations, showcasing how music can bridge gaps and foster connections.
Repertoire That Celebrates Unity
Under the guidance of accomplished instructors like TeWinkle Middle School Choir’s Stacy Neacato and Costa Mesa High School's Ashley Riopka, the choir will sing an exhilarating selection of songs, including classics that speak to the themes of unity and diversity. Expect to hear titles such as “Lean on Me” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing”—songs that not only resonate with the spirit of independence but also celebrate our shared hopes for the future.
How to Get Involved
For those inspired to join in, the next rehearsals are scheduled for June 23 and June 30 from 6 to 9 PM at the Costa Mesa Senior Center, located at 695 W. 19th St. All prospective choir members are encouraged to come out, bringing their enthusiasm as well as their friends and family. As Wondercheck notes, it’s not about perfect notes but the joy of coming together in harmony. Join the Voices in Unity and make this Independence Day truly special—your voice matters!
As we gather to celebrate the heart of our communities, the Voices in Unity: America 250 Choir offers all of us a unique chance to create lasting memories while honoring our rich collective heritage. Don't miss this opportunity to lift your voice among your neighbors!
