Long Beach Honors Veterans with a Vibrant Celebration
Long Beach is gearing up for its annual Veterans Day celebration at Houghton Park on Saturday, November 8, an event that honors both veterans and those currently serving in the U.S. military. Designed to be family-friendly and accessible to all, this free festival promises a day filled with community spirit and appreciation.
What Awaits at Houghton Park
From noon to 4 p.m., attendees can expect a plethora of activities including a Veterans Recognition Ceremony, which will highlight remarkable individuals and organizations for their service to the veteran community. Live performances will feature The Satin Dollz, known for their nod to the 1940s Big Band Swing Era, and Knyght Ryder, a band celebrated for their tribute to the '80s and '90s hits.
In addition to musical acts, guests can enjoy food trucks, a beer garden, and kid-friendly zones complete with a bootcamp-style obstacle course and even historic aircraft flyovers—a thrilling highlight for the whole family.
Civic Pride and Community Spirit
Mayor Rex Richardson underscores the significance of this day, stating, “Veterans Day serves as a reminder that our freedoms were secured through courage, sacrifice, and service.” This year, the celebration emphasizes not only veterans' valor but also the spirit of unity that Long Beach residents share.
“Veterans remind us what service truly means,” noted Dr. Joni Ricks-Oddie, the Ninth District Councilmember. With this annual event, Long Beach aims to bridge the gap between service members and the community, reinforcing the ongoing contributions that veterans make to local society.
New Horizons: The Veterans Banner Program Expansion
This year, Long Beach expands its tribute to veterans through a banner program displaying the faces and names of local heroes along Atlantic Avenue, Bellflower Boulevard, and Lakewood Boulevard. With 65 banners lining these streets, the recognition has grown from last year's 25, further demonstrating the city's commitment to honor the servicemen and women among them.
