Bringing Smiles to Neighbors in Need
In the spirit of giving this holiday season, the Girl Scouts of Troop 7370 in Huntington Beach are making a significant impact. On a sunny Tuesday afternoon, these young and eager members joined hands at the Huntington Beach Church to prepare 100 gift boxes destined for the Waymakers Huntington Beach Youth Shelter. Wearing Santa hats and big smiles, the girls from various troops came together to lend a helping hand during Operation Waymakers.
Understanding Wants Versus Needs
The thoughtful gift boxes each contained four essential "need" items such as toiletries and socks, alongside two "want" items like stuffed animals or nail polish. This exercise in distinction between wants and needs is part of the Girl Scouts’ badge program, emphasizes troop leader Nicole Gaylord. She mentions, "This teaches the girls more than just assembling boxes; it’s about mindful giving." Kaitlyn Eun, a cheerful fourth-grader from Smith Elementary School, expressed her joy, saying, "It feels great to share some of what we have with others in our community."
A Tradition of Giving Back
This marks the third consecutive year that Troop 7370 has taken part in Operation Waymakers. In previous years, they have extended their generosity through Operation Christmas Child, sending gift boxes worldwide. This year, they chose to focus on those closer to home, demonstrating the power of local community support. "Our troop is always eager to engage in activities that strengthen our local ties," co-leader Jordan Young added, reflecting on the troop's enthusiasm for community participation.
Joining Hands for a Brighter Community
Devon Noonan, a spirited 10-year-old from Moffett Elementary and a relatively new member of Troop 7370, shared her excitement in assembling the boxes. "This may be the only holiday gift some children receive, and knowing we can bring them happiness makes me feel proud," Devon explained. The Waymakers Huntington Beach Youth Shelter, alongside community partners such as the Oak View group, will distribute these heartfelt gifts to children and families, further strengthening the ties within the community.
Why This Matters Now
With many families facing challenges, initiatives like Operation Waymakers highlight the importance of compassion and giving back. The effort by Troop 7370 and its members exemplifies how small actions can contribute to larger community well-being, especially during the holiday season when need becomes more pronounced. Such endeavors remind us all of the power of kindness and unity.
