Making Waves for a Cause: The Holiday Classic Christmas Contest
In a spirited display of community and charity, surfers from across the Southern California coastline gathered for the Calvary Chapel Surfing Association’s Holiday Classic Christmas Contest near Huntington Beach Pier. This joyful annual event, open to surfers from the young age of 13 to the seasoned age of 45, combined the exhilaration of riding the waves with a heartfelt mission to help children in need. Participants, comprised of 50 skilled athletes, not only pushed their physical limits but also competed to raise over $1,000.
The funds, collected through registration fees and generous sponsorships, will benefit the Operation Christmas Child project, a segment of the global non-profit Samaritan’s Purse. Led by Graham Stanley and Edgar Apodaca, the event championed the idea that every shoebox gift filled with toys, socks, and other thoughtful items can light up a child's Christmas morning in parts of the world where cheer is often rare.
The Global Impact of Local Efforts
Samaritan’s Purse, under the leadership of Franklin Graham, continues to extend its reach by providing humanitarian aid to millions worldwide. The funds raised by this surf contest will support the Christmas shoebox initiative, which aims to bring joy to children globally. The project allows donors to personally tailor shoeboxes through an intuitive online platform, choosing specific gifts for either a boy or girl, thereby sending not just items, but messages of hope and goodwill.
Edgar Apodaca, one of the event coordinators, notes, “What starts with a small community gathering near the beach can have ripples that reach far beyond, touching children's lives in places we've never even seen.”
A Tradition of Kindness at the Heart of the Community
This surfing competition demonstrates the season's spirit, reminding us that generosity and community are as integral to the holiday as the surf is to the shoreline. CCSA’s contest stands as a vivid testament to the warmth and camaraderie that can flourish when people share a common purpose. This poignant initiative continues to strengthen the bonds within the community while making an indelible difference worldwide.
Through such events, local surfers are empowered to combine their love of the sport with philanthropy. Graham Stanley, who acted as the event announcer, shared, “We continuously look forward to these moments where the local surf culture can ride high on waves of compassion.”
Looking Towards the Future: A Call for Continued Support
The success of this year’s event sets a hopeful precedent for future contests and charity-driven endeavors. Volunteers and community members are encouraged to continue building on this legacy of kindness, ensuring that Samaritan’s Purse and similar organizations receive ongoing support. By doing so, they maximize the positive impact of local events and contribute to a broader network of humanitarian aid.
“Next year, we aim to make an even bigger splash—both in the ocean and in our ability to give back,” Graham Stanley enthused, emphasizing the invaluable role of community engagement in creating lasting change.
