Providence has agreed to evaluate whether a smaller-scale hospital could preserve round-the-clock emergency care in Laguna Beach. The concept is still under study; no final facility plan, construction schedule, or service list has been approved.
The discussion grew out of the Laguna Beach Hospital Task Force’s work on the future of local emergency services. At its August 20 meeting, task-force members considered whether a limited number of observation or short-stay beds could support a 24-hour emergency department capable of receiving patients by ambulance.
What the Study Will Examine
Providence is expected to assess whether a smaller hospital model is clinically, financially, and operationally workable. Important questions include the number and type of beds, staffing needs, ambulance access, regulatory requirements, and which services would be offered on site.
