Celebrating Creativity at the Art Star Awards
On a warm April evening, dozens of Laguna Beach’s most cherished creatives gathered at the Festival of Arts to celebrate their immense talent at the 18th Annual Art Star Awards. Organized by the Laguna Beach Arts Alliance, this event not only acknowledged exceptional artistic contributions but also highlighted the close-knit community spirit that fosters creativity in this coastal town.
Highlights of the Night
The evening was filled with excitement, as awards were presented for various categories, including Best Arts Program and Outstanding Arts Collaboration. Among the winners were KXFM 104.7 for Best Arts Program and the Laguna Community Concert Band for Outstanding Arts Collaboration, both of whom created memorable experiences for audiences through their outstanding performances.
One of the most emotional moments was when Arnold Livingston Geis and Oriana Geis-Falla were awarded Artist of the Year. Their heartfelt rendition of the opera song “Te Amo” uplifted the audience, and Geis-Falla later expressed her gratitude on Instagram, noting the honor of being the first couple of opera singers to receive such recognition.
A Nod to Community Philanthropy
Alongside the artistic accolades was the presentation of a lifetime achievement award to local musicians Beth and Steve Wood, whose contributions to the community reflect a deep-rooted passion for the arts. Additionally, the Quilter family was honored as Arts Patron of the Year for their substantial contributions, including a remarkable $40 million gift to Laguna College of Art and Design, aimed at funding a new Innovation Center.
As arts commissioner Pat Kollenda stated, “The Quilter family’s generosity extends far beyond any single institution.” Their contributions have made a tangible difference in ensuring that art remains accessible to everyone in the community.
Performances That Enchant
The evening was not merely a celebration of awards; it included captivating performances from local groups such as Opera Laguna and Laguna Dance. The audience experienced a melting pot of creativity, showcasing everything from dance to theatrical acts, all under the talented direction of master of ceremonies Roxanna Ward. Her humor and charm kept spirits high, turning the night into a memorable affair.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Arts in Laguna Beach
This year’s theme, “Art Stars Shine,” encapsulated the essence of the evening, but it also sets a tone for the future of the arts in Laguna Beach. The hopes of directors like Jennifer Baker of the Laguna Community Concert Band resonate throughout the artistic community as they seek more collaboration in future projects. “You haven’t seen anything yet,” Baker declared, hinting at the promising fusion of talents yet to unfold.
As the Laguna Beach Arts Alliance continues to advocate for the arts, it is clear that nurturing creative talent benefits not only the artists but also the community as a whole, enriching cultural experiences for everyone involved.
