Crafting Taylor's Wave: A Surfing Icon in the Making
A few miles north of downtown Asheville lies a construction site transforming the French Broad River into a new surfing hotspot. What initially appears as an industrial mishap is, in fact, Taylor's Wave—one of the most ambitious river surfing projects on the East Coast.
Why the French Broad River?
The French Broad is no ordinary river. Known for its width and consistent flow year-round, it presents an ideal location for a permanent surfing wave. Many local rivers are either too shallow, too steep, or inconsistent, making Taylor's Wave a groundbreaking venture. Olympic kayaker Scott Shipley, who founded S2O Design and Engineering, quickly recognized its potential when he floated stretches of the river alongside fellow paddler Marc Hunt back in 2016. Their search was driven not only by the river’s gradient and reliable flows but also by the existence of an old landfill. Their clever strategy involved removing part of this landfill to manage the hydraulic impact of the new wave, ultimately solving a significant environmental issue.
Engineering the Perfect Wave
While standing waves may appear natural, they require complex engineering. The process began with creating a digital model of the riverbed, capturing every detail from submerged rocks to old bridge remnants. This digitally crafted model transitioned to the Czech Technical University for thorough testing.
Using a scaled replica of the river, engineers refined the wave's design—a process similar to tuning a Formula 1 car in a wind tunnel. The team's meticulous approach underscores the engineering marvel unfolding along the river.
The Woodfin Greenway and Blueway Project
Taylor's Wave is not just about surfing; it's a crucial component of the broader Woodfin Greenway and Blueway project. With an estimated budget of $30 - 34 million, this initiative will enhance the riverfront by constructing greenways and recreational facilities, including viewing areas and public gathering spaces near the wave. This development exemplifies how the town of Woodfin is embracing its natural assets and enhancing the community's outdoor offerings.
What Lies Ahead for Taylor's Wave?
Construction for Taylor's Wave began in June 2024, with much anticipation surrounding its completion. As the project nears its projected completion in late 2025, locals and visitors alike are eager to see how it will transform their outdoor recreation experience.
Bringing the Surfing Community Together
More than just a wave, this project is an invitation to adventure for surfers, kayakers, and paddleboarders from across the nation. There are plans for kayak rentals and other gear, making Taylor's Wave a communal space for thrill-seekers and families alike.
In honor of Marc Hunt's son, Taylor, the venture aims to unite the community and pay tribute to the joys of river sports. As Woodfin prepares to welcome visitors from near and far, Taylor's Wave stands poised to become a landmark in river surfing and a testament to community spirit.
If you’re an adrenaline junkie seeking your next thrill, keep an eye on Taylor's Wave—it promises to be an iconic addition to the Asheville surf scene.
