WAGS Steps In as Temporary Shelter Provider for Costa Mesa
In a move that is sure to be welcomed by animal lovers across the area, Costa Mesa has officially partnered with the Westminster Adoption Group and Services (WAGS) to provide temporary animal sheltering and veterinary care. This temporary arrangement comes after the city ended a long-standing contract with Priceless Pets, who previously managed these vital services.
WAGS: A Trusted Partner
Located at 6621 Westminster Blvd., WAGS has been serving the community since its inception 15 years ago. Known for their commitment to animal welfare, they operate a full-service shelter and adoption center. According to Mayor John Stephens, WAGS has a stellar reputation, boasting impressive facilities that include spacious play areas for dogs and dedicated spaces for cats. "I personally visited their facility and was very impressed," Stephens remarked.
Background on the Transition
The transition from Priceless Pets to WAGS comes after the former was unable to meet certain contractual obligations, which included establishing a full-service veterinary center within city limits. Following a constructive letter from Costa Mesa Police Chief Joyce LaPointe citing several compliance issues, the city council voted to sever ties—a decision made with thoughtful consideration of the animals’ well-being.
Understanding the Need for a New Shelter
As Costa Mesa prepares for the long-term solution to its animal care needs, having WAGS as an interim partner ensures that essential services continue uninterrupted. While WAGS handles animal adoptions, lost and found pet assistance, and sheltering, the city will maintain administrative functions such as dog licensing and rabies verification. This collaborative effort assures residents that, even in transition, animal welfare remains a top priority.
The Impact on the Community
For residents of Costa Mesa, Sunset Beach, Huntington Beach, and Seal Beach, the arrival of WAGS will provide peace of mind. This change enables a seamless continuation of services while keeping the animal welfare community vibrant and engaged. Furthermore, WAGS' low euthanasia policy, which guarantees that euthanasia is used only as a last resort, resonates deeply with the community’s values.
Moving Forward Together
Community leaders have expressed optimism about this partnership. Michelle Russillo, President of WAGS, stated, "We are grateful for the opportunity to serve the city of Costa Mesa and will focus on a smooth, community-first transition that prioritizes pets’ safety and care." This marks a new chapter in animal welfare for the city and the surrounding areas, paving the way for a future filled with hopeful, forever homes for pets.
Get Involved
As this transition unfolds, community members have an opportunity to engage with WAGS. Whether through volunteering, fostering, or adopting, there are myriad ways to support the ongoing efforts to improve the lives of the animals in Costa Mesa.
